The yearly Saint Roch Candle Night is undoubtedly the main tourist attraction of the township of Aarschot. Year after year, thousands of lit candles conjure up a magical and fairylike atmosphere and attract thousands of visitors to Aarschot, the "Pearl of the Hageland" ("Hedge Country").

A time-honoured tradition has it that on the evening of 15 August all electrical lights are extinguished in Aarschot and the surrounding neighbourhoods between 09:00 P.M. and midnight and the city envelops itself in a cloak of darkness. The citizens of Aarschot then illuminate their houses with myriads of candles and also the local shopkeepers cooperate by lighting up their window displays in an enchanting way. This picturesque habit immerses the cosy town bordering the river Demer in a magical atmosphere. Every single year this fairylike spectacle has striking new features to offer and it is spiced up with several tourist and cultural activities.
